Ah yes....Efteling. Some even call it the Dutch Disneyland. The first time we visited, we left in absolute awe. Perhaps the best and most unique theme park in Europe, maybe even the world. Efteling is a place like you have never seen before and is enjoyable for everyone, at all times. It is a park that subtly integrates attractions into a beautiful, lush, and green nature park where storytelling and guest experience are at the heart of everything they do. The resort contains 1 major theme park, including the magical fairytale forest, and 4 themed hotels.

An introduction to Efteling

On the 31st of May 1952, Efteling opened its gates for the first time and was an immediate success. What started as a small nature park with 10 fairytales, a swimming pool, 4 tennis courts, and a small souvenir shop eventually became one of the most iconic theme parks in the world. Efteling today is known for its unique style and theming, attaching every attraction to a fairytale or unique story and completely immersing the guest in a world of its own. With world-class attractions like Baron 1898, Danse Macabre, Symbolica, and its fairytale forest, the park offers something for everyone. The resort today consists of 1 full theme park with more than 30 attractions, the fairytale forest where you can discover 30 fairytales, and 4 resort hotels including the just-opened Efteling Grand Hotel.

The park is divided into 5 realms that are somewhat themed to their name. Efteling works more in immersive areas rather than themed lands. There is no real distinction in when you cross a certain realm. The 5 realms are called: Anderrijk, Marerijk, Reizenrijk, Ruigrijk and Fantasierijk.

Best time to visit

Efteling received almost 5 million visitors in 2025, making it one of the most visited theme parks in Europe. Although that sounds like a lot, Efteling is open 365 days a year and has been really good at spreading crowds across the year, making sure the park isn't overcrowded and queues are manageable. With that being said, there are still things to take into account:

  • Try to avoid weekends. Especially Friday and Saturday are generally busier than other days. We've experienced Sunday to be less crowded in general.

  • The busy seasons overall usually have something to do with a school holiday. Just like other theme parks in Europe, take into consideration that every country has its own holidays, so even though The Netherlands isn't off, other countries can be. Spring break (April and May) is usually crowded; the summer season (July, August and September); October (mainly due to the fall holidays); and the Christmas vacation (end of December until the beginning of January).

  • The quieter times we have experienced are: Mid to end of January, February, March, June and November.

  • Efteling is not only known for its amazing rides, attractions, and nature in the park but also the yearly returning Winter Efteling. From the start of November through to the beginning of February, you will find the park all decorated in winter festivities. A completely different atmosphere and park experience. Definitely a must-visit!

  • Please check the upcoming ride closures before you visit! If you are keen to get on a certain ride and it's closed during your visit, we do not wish that to anyone. You can find the ride closures on the calendar of the park.

How many days should you spend at Efteling

Efteling is a slow park where you can truly relax and take everything in. The park is known for its lush environment where greenery gets the same attention as the rides and attractions.

If you are visiting the Netherlands and have a tight schedule where you just want to have a quick look at the park and experience all the must-do attractions, 1 full day is enough. There is plenty of time to discover all the rides, have some signature snacks, and take your time to stroll through the fairytale forest. Take into account that Efteling is only open from 11:00-18:00 on very slow days, usually in November, January, and February. The average opening times vary from 10:00-18:00, 10:00-19:00, or 10:00-20:00.

When you want to experience the Efteling for the first time like it's meant to be (trust us), plan 2 full days at the resort. All the rides are incredible, and you want to experience them more than once. The entire park is absolutely beautiful and needs time to be discovered. When you have an extra day, you can enjoy some of the dining options and enjoy the park entertainment. We recommend staying onsite when you spend 2 full days at the resort. How to get to Efteling

Even though Efteling is in the south of the Netherlands, the infrastructure is extremely convenient to travel to the resort in your preferred way. The Netherlands is relatively small, and the resort is located close to major cities like Tilburg, Breda and 's Hertogenbosch. Efteling is also located just 30 minutes from the Belgian border.

  • By plane. There are two main airports to consider flying into. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is about 1,5 hours away. You can take a train and bus and travel directly to the resort. Depending on where you come from, Rotterdam Airport is closer by but is usually only accessible by a limited number of destinations.

  • By train. Efteling is located in Kaatsheuvel, The Netherlands, and the closest city is Tilburg. From that station, take a 20-minute bus ride, and you are right at the front of the park. You can travel to Tilburg Central Station by train from almost any city in the Netherlands. If you are travelling from outside the Netherlands to Efteling, there is an international train from Brussels that travels to Breda. From Breda, there is a direct train to Tilburg.

  • By taxi. This isn't our recommended option. A taxi or Uber can be very expensive, wherever you are coming from in the Netherlands. Consider taking public transport or renting a car for your own convenience.

  • By car. If you come to Efteling by car, you can travel to the destination at your own convenience. Parking is €15 per day, and if you are staying onsite, it is included in your stay.

Where to stay

Efteling has been developed in the last decade to be a multi-day experience. The resort has 4 different hotels, each with their own theme and charm. We have stayed at all of them and loved them for a different reason. Every resort has easy accessibility to the park and is within walking distance. The service and experience are really world-class, whichever hotel you choose. Guests staying at a hotel or resort get standard breakfast included and unlimited access to the park for the entirety of your stay (this includes check-in/out day) and get access to the park 30 minutes before regular day guests. The offered attractions can be different on each day.

Efteling has 4 different resort hotels:

  • Efteling Grand Hotel - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - $$$$$

This brand new hotel is the first (and only) hotel to be located inside the park! With 4 different themes and views, you will have the most luxurious stay. This hotel contains 2 restaurants, a bar, a swimming pool and spa, 2 shops, and features amenities you would expect from such a hotel, like valet parking, concierge, and room service.

  • Efteling Wonder Hotel - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - $$$$

Always wanted to stay in a floating castle? The Wonder Hotel had a major refurbishment from 2021 through 2025 and is now fully themed and designed for this day and age. The hotel features standard rooms themed lightly to Efteling characters, but you can also choose to stay in a themed suite where you can choose your favourite Efteling story and fully immerse yourself for the entirety of your stay. This hotel contains 1 restaurant, a bar, a small shop, and features room service

  • Efteling Loonsche Land - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - $$$

Always wanted to stay in the dunes? Located right next to nature park the Loonse and Drunense Duinen, you can stay in cabins that float above the water or in the trees. The setup of the resort is similar to Efteling Bosrijk, where there is a hotel at the front of the park where you can book a room as well. This resort is just a bit more expensive compared to Bosrijk but includes your tickets, breakfast, and parking. There is 1 restaurant you can enjoy, or you can have pizza delivered.

  • Efteling Bosrijk - ⭐⭐⭐ - $$$

The biggest (and cheapest) option onsite is Bosrijk. This vacation park has cute cabins and holiday houses where you stay right next to Efteling in a lush forest. There is also a small hotel that is part of the resort and right at the entrance where you can book a room if that is your preference. This is the cheapest option to stay onsite but still includes your tickets, breakfast, and parking. There is 1 restaurant, a small shop for little groceries, and you can get pizza delivered right at your front door. There is also a swimming pool for you to enjoy after a wonderful day at the park!

Our other hotel recommendations:

  • GuestHouse Hotel Kaatsheuvel - ⭐⭐⭐ - $$

Just a 15-minute walk from Efteling, where you stay in the village next to the park. This modern hotel has everything you need but is a much more budget-friendly option. Please note that tickets and breakfast are not included in this stay.

  • Mercure Hotel Tilburg Centrum - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - $$$

Right in Tilburg city centre, you will find this luxury hotel if you are planning to visit Efteling for one day only or want a more city-focused stay. This hotel is located next to multiple bus stops, and you can take a direct bus to the park. Please note that tickets and breakfast are not included in this stay.

How to buy park tickets

One of the easiest things to do is buy tickets. There are two options that we recommend when buying tickets:

  1. Book directly through the Efteling website. If you are spending a few days at Efteling and want to stay on-site, this is the best option for you. Book directly through Efteling.com. Please note that if you book an official hotel or resort at Efteling, you do not have to purchase separate tickets. These are included in your stay.

  2. Get your tickets via Get Your Guide. If you are coming for a day or two and are not staying on-site, this is a good option. It usually is a bit cheaper and is an easy and trustworthy option to book your tickets.

What to bring

Efteling is surprisingly big, and lands or “Rijken,” as Efteling calls it, are spread out. In a full day, you could easily reach the 30.000 steps; we can guarantee you that. We have experienced that because there is so much to see and do, you automatically walk slower and kinda shuffle instead of walking.

The Netherlands is a country where it rains. A lot. Also on days where the weather forecast predicts sunshine and blue skies, it can still rain the entire day. So be prepared that it might rain the entire day; you never know.

What we would definitely bring or wear:

  • Comfortable walking shoes. Wear them in before walking a gazillion steps with them. You can thank us later :)

  • A reusable water bottle. You can almost drink from every tap at Efteling. No need to buy bottles of water.

  • Snacks! Although Efteling has a lot of affordable snacks and food options, you might like to enjoy the things you brought from home. Especially for kids, you never know if they like certain food options, so better safe than sorry.

  • A charger and power bank. You will be on your phone a lot! If you want to or not. Efteling isn’t a phone-heavy park. But you would want to check out queues, dining options, and perhaps make use of a virtual queue.

Tip! If you don't want to use the app or your phone, Efteling still has paper park maps for you to enjoy. There are multiple screens inside the park where you can find all the wait times and directions. So you don't absolutely need your phone to navigate the park.

Practical information

Efteling App

We have experienced that Efteling has one of the best park apps we have ever worked with. It’s very fast, efficient, and the overview of the park is extremely detailed. We appreciate that. In the app you can find everything you need for your day at Efteling. Attractions, wait times, dining options, toilets, etc.

Dutch language & Cultural Differences

Now, don’t get us wrong. We love the Dutch. But if you are visiting for the first time, certain elements can feel a bit….unusual. Especially if you have never visited The Netherlands before. The Dutch can be very direct. It’s never in a mean way, but the information provided is always very straightforward, and you get an answer to your question immediately. The positive side is that every Efteling staff member we have encountered is extremely friendly and caring. They are willing to make your day absolutely unforgettable.

The Netherlands in general is surprisingly good at English. Almost everyone spoke perfectly english or was able to understand and help us along the way. There was no need for anyone to get another staff member or get Google Translate involved. For a non-Dutch speaker, you will be absolutely fine.

How to pay

Just like all major theme parks in Europe, Efteling does an excellent job of having multiple options for payment. You can mobile order via the app, which supports most methods of payment. In the park, we have found that all major debit and credit cards are accepted. If your card doesn't work, there is an ATM in the middle of the park where you can get cash.

Internet & Wifi

Efteling offers free wifi to all guests and can be used inside the entire park and all the resorts. Bear in mind that not every spot in the park has service or has the strongest connection. If you are visiting the Netherlands for the first time and would like to be sure of constant service, we recommend getting an E-Sim.

Attractions

Although Efteling doesn't have the most attractions we have seen in a theme park, it is a park we've experienced as very fulfilling. It is a park where there is a lot to discover and room to wander around. There is no need to rush from attraction to attraction, which makes it so much more enjoyable for us personally. The major takeaway from Efteling is that it basically consists of two elements: The Fairytale Forest and attractions.

The fairytale forest is where it all began for Efteling and is one of the most unique elements you will find in a theme park. With 30 fairytales, each presented in its own way (some even include a ride), spend time to take it all in and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere of this part of the park. With that said, what attractions should you get on?

Efteling You-Must-Have-Been-On-Rides:

  • Danse Macabre - This is praised by some to be "the best ride in the world". We're just gonna leave that there and you get to decide if you agree. This ride is a Dynamic Motion Stage, the first kind in the world. You take a seat in a choir stall and dance to the music. It's a family-friendly ride that tilts, spins, and drops. An absolute gem in terms of story, theming, and overall ride experience.

  • Baron 1898 - A dive coaster that tells the story of Baron Gustave Hooghmoed and his greed to find the gold hidden in the mines.

  • De Vliegende Hollander - Step aboard a boat and discover the story of Willem Van Der Decken. Although not the most thrilling coaster, the effects and theming make this an absolute not-to-be-missed ride.

  • Droomvlucht - Dream with your eyes wide open in this magical dark ride full of elves and magical creatures.

  • Symbolica - Go on an adventure with Pardoes through the palace of fantasy.

  • Fata Morgana - This classic dark ride is based on the stories of 1001 nights. An absolute Efteling classic.

  • Steam Train - This is one of our favourite attractions because you ride around the park and can take in the beautiful nature and greenery. An absolute must-do if you are visiting Efteling!

  • George and the Dragon - This wooden duelling coaster is a high-speed, thrilling coaster that is enjoyable for the whole family.

  • Villa Volta - This madhouse is one of the best we have ever done. The music is excellent and gave us actual goosebumps.

  • Carnaval Festival - Similar to It's A Small World in the Disney Parks, travel around the world with Jokie & Jet in this fun and musical adventure.

  • Vogel Rok - The World of Sindbad awaits with this high-speed rollercoaster in the dark.

Other worthy mentions:

  • Anton Pieck Plein - Anton Pieck Plein is perhaps the most detailed and well-designed part of the park. Designed by Disney Imagineer Michel Den Dulk, this area is inspired by the first designer of Efteling, Anton Pieck. The square features a couple of carousels, merry-go-rounds, and swing rides as well as, in our opinion, the best fries and snacks in the park at the Smulpaap.

  • Gondoletta - This slow boat ride takes you on the water for a relaxing ride around the backside of the park. An attraction where you get to sit back, relax and enjoy the views of this wonderful theme park. Gondoletta is known for the Dutch to have their lunch in, so don't be surprised if you see everyone eating on the attraction. You're supposed to :)

  • Pagode - Pagode is a flying temple where you soar across the sky and have an amazing view of the park. This attraction usually has a minimal wait and is definitely a must-visit!

Entertainment

Efteling has a good lineup of park entertainment. To be honest, we are not huge fans of their park entertainment. This mostly has to do with personal taste, and we usually find it a bit awkward to look at, and story-wise it doesn't really get across. But that is our opinion; we would love for you to explore and find out yourself!

  • Meet & Greets - The main mascot of Efteling is Pardoes. You can meet him at the main square just before Symbolica, the "castle" attraction of the park. There are also other meet & greet options throughout the year like the characters from Raveleijn, Roodkapje and Jokie & Jet. Pardoes is the only character we have seen to have a constant meet & greet. Keep an eye out on the app to find out what characters are meeting on the day of your visit.

  • Park shows - Efteling has a wonderful line-up of park shows, both extensive and somewhat smaller. The main park show is Raveleijn. This show is currently on hiatus due to a refurbishment but should come back at the end of 2026. This show is a high-capacity, action-packed show filled with special effects, music, lights, and performers. Other smaller shows:

    • Cabaret Macabre - Just before the entrance of Danse Macabre, you can find Cabaret Macabre. A whimsical show that features the Charlatans performing the most intriguing arts and tricks. Fun to stop by if you're around!

    • Jokie & Jet - This cute show is perfect for little ones who enjoy the characters from Carnaval Festival, Jokie & Jet!

    • Sprookjessprokkelaar - This rarely seen character collects stories from the Fairytale Forest and passes his stories on to Efteling visitors.

    • Sprookjesboomshow - This outdoor theatre right in the heart of the fairytale forest brings the characters of the forest to life.

  • Nighttime Spectaculars - Aquanura is the park's main nighttime spectacular and definitely a must-see on your visit. This watershow in front of Fata Morgana features waterjets, music, lights, lasers, and projections. It's a perfect ending to your magical day and takes you through all the stories you have explored on your day.

  • Theatre Show - Caro is a paid theatre performance. This unique show is an add-on and takes you through the carousel of dreams. It is a non-spoken show, so no worries about not understanding the story. If you are staying onsite, it is a nice option to see this show.

Dining

Efteling has an overall good offering in food & beverage. There is something for everybody, and the park has many options to choose from. A big difference with other parks is the, in our opinion, lack of quality dining experiences. The park features 1 table service option, and it's just pancakes. Although very good, you would expect a bit more from such a world-class theme park. There are numerous quick service and snack options, but don't expect to get a wonderful sit-down dinner in the park itself.

  • Table Service - The only option inside the park is Polles Keuken. A cute and very well themed pancake house where you can get lunch and dinner. All the resorts do offer table service restaurants, and perhaps that is the whole strategy behind it: guests who are staying onsite are somewhat forced to eat at their resort. The resort's restaurants are pretty decent, and as we've tried them all, we would highly recommend Restaurant Saga at the Efteling Wonder Hotel. An absolutely beautiful restaurant where you can relax and have a wonderful, delicious meal.

  • Quick Service - The Dutch love a quick, easy, and cheap meal. So with that being said, you will find fries and snacks to be EVERYWHERE. Although it is a theme park staple, parks like these should have more in our opinion. Efteling does have a few outstanding quick service/takeaway options. At Backerei Krumel you can get pizzas, pastries, and an assortment of fresh sandwiches. At Oase, you can find Turkish Pizza and Chicken Kebab sandwiches, absolutely amazing. The rest of the park has mostly burgers, fries, and snacks.

  • Snacks - Efteling has some nice and unique snacks that are unique and distinctly Dutch. "Broodje Unox" is a bun with a smoked sausage which contains all different types of toppings and sauces, depending on the season. A definite must-try if you are visiting. The "Eigenheymer" is a fried potato on a stick that is curled up, so it's basically chips. Very delicious. We have tried various sweet treats at multiple locations, and everything was delicious and affordable.

Our Personal Recommendations

Efteling is one of the most unique and beautiful theme parks we have ever seen. It is comparable to the level of quality of Disney and Universal in terms of theming, storytelling, and overall experience. We have found the park experience to be very enjoyable and relaxing, which often doesn't happen in a theme park.

  • Get there early! If you are not staying onsite, definitely be parked and ready to go at least an hour before the park officially opens. You can have a little browse, get some coffee, and take in the atmosphere before all the rides open. Once the gates open, you can almost immediately enjoy your first attraction.

  • Stay onsite. If this is your "once in a lifetime" trip, PLEASE stay onsite in one of the hotels. The staff is amazing, the rooms are wonderful, and the overall quality and value for money is great in our opinion. The entire experience is way more relaxed when you have the luxury to hop back to your resort.

  • Start with the Fairytale Forest. If you have the time and have seen all the rides, the Fairytale Forest is usually very quiet in the morning. With everyone hopping to rides and getting in line first thing in the morning, this entire area usually gets busier during the day. So take advantage of this reversed strategy!

  • Take in all the details. We have found Efteling to be extremely detailed, and it is full of hidden elements, theming, and the overall scenery is beautiful. Take your time to take it all in and appreciate your surroundings. The theme park experience is much more enjoyable in this way.
